Article no.: HSK-Acid-Mixtures
There are four main categories for acid mixtures; Acid Mixtures for pigs, Acid Mixtures for cattle, acid mixtures for compound feed and acid mixtures for Fish silage.
Formic acid is the base chemical in most acid mixtures, where it represents between 30 to 60% of the active ingredients. It is well known for its anti-bacterial effect, which derives from its lowering of the pH in the feedstuff and grass silage. The combination of formic acid with different organic chemicals as propionic acid, lactic acid, benzoic acid, lignosulfonic acid as well as MPG and natural salts, is custom made for the different applications and helps improve the overall quality of the feed, in the end improving animal welfare.
Examples of applications
Acid Mixtures for pigs are used as preservation of the watersystems and the wet feed. The mixtures consists of formic acid, lactic acid, propionic acid and benzoic acid. The composition of the mixture helps improve feed hygiene and effectively prevents the animals from taking up molds, bacteria and yeasts and thus successfully preventing salmonella and lawsonia in the pig herds.
Acid Mixtures for cattle (grass silage). In 1945 Artturi Ilmari Virtanen, a Finnish chemist, won the Nobel Price for his invention of the silage method , where formic acid is used as preservation of grass silage. This well known method is used widely in most parts of Northern Europe, where the harvested grass has an increased risk of catching molds and fungus in the wet climate. The silage products consist of formic acid, propionic acid and sodium formate and are custom made for the different climates in the Scandinavian region. A low dry matter in the hay will require a higher formic acid contend, whereas a high dry matter would require the addition of propionic acid.
Acid Mixtures for Fish Silage consist of max 85% formic acid and an active antioxidant. The only application for this product (marketed as HELM FS+ and HELM FS Light) is the preservation of fish by-products from both the Fish farms and the Pelagic sector. The formic acid lowers the pH in the fish silage, in order to prevent the development of bacteria and it also helps in the process of cutting the fish protein strings in order to better extract the fish protein. The antioxidant helps preventing the oxidation of the fish oil in the fish silage.
